In today’s interconnected world, we need leaders who are respected and experienced in problem solving at a global level. That’s why the Elders – an independent group of eminent global leaders working together for peace and human rights – was founded in 2007 by Nelson Mandela, with the support of Virgin Unite and other donors.
As a member of the Elders Advisory Council Virgin Unite is part of the ‘engine’ that not only provides the Elders with financial support and offers a range of experience and resources, but also helps the group to expand the reach of its good work. Working with a select group of 10 to 12 partners and the Elders’ management team, we guarantee the Elders the independence that it needs to succeed.
The group’s work is inspired by the role that elders play in traditional societies, where they are a source of advice, wisdom and experience. Working in areas such as Sudan, Cyprus, the Middle East and Zimbabwe, the Elders support courage where there is fear, foster agreement where there is conflict and offer hope where there is despair. The group also works on a number of global issues including gender equality and climate change.
