Gaia Rocks is all about celebrating Mother Natureby highlighting important projects working at the frontline to protect Earth’s fabulous – and fragile – ecosystems and species. All of the projects receive support from Richard Branson, Virgin Unite and the wider Virgin family. And all of them need your support, too.
Imagine for a moment the vast array of organisms and matter that make up life on Earth. Millions of species across land, air and water. Minerals, soils, trees, vegetation. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the crops and animals that feed us. And the basis for our economies, our jobs – and all of our futures.
In ancient Greek mythology – the power that creates and sustains these natural systems is known as Gaia, the goddess or spirit of the earth. As scientist James Lovelock says: ‘My Gaia theory sees the Earth behaving as if it were alive, and clearly anything alive can enjoy good health, or suffer disease.’ He goes on to warn that today, climate specialists see the Earth as seriously ill – perhaps even on the verge of collapse.
This is a wake up call for all of us alive on Earth at the turn of the 21st century. Either we work with
Mother Nature – or we are working against her. The good news is that by working to protect, harness and value natural assets we have a chance to develop a new way of life that is more harmonious, productive and prosperous for all of humankind – now and in the generations that follow.
Gaia Rocks! So let’s rock with her!
