While we are only at the brink of commercial space travel, ongoing innovation and success rests in the hands of future generations in the fields of science, technology, math, engineering and business entrepreneurship (STEM+). To answer some of the toughest global challenges and to create millions of STEM+ opportunities for young people, Galactic Unite is working to promote the necessary skills in students, now and in the future, through education, entrepreneurship, and inspiration.
“Galactic Unite has been inspired and driven by the amazing international community of Virgin Galactic's future astronauts. As a group of pioneers, they are already helping lifelong learning and industry development to take shape. It is extremely exciting to see they are also combining their resources to act as a force for good." Richard Branson
Galactic Unite Lessons Plans for Educators
Virgin Galactic and Galactic Unite announce the first of their lesson plans and resources!
These aim to engage and inspire educators and students around Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo test flight milestones. You can now download free lesson plans, activities and resources below, which are pitched at students ages 5-18. Teachers can use these to enhance technology and engineering lessons, as well as help develop aerospace career paths for students around the world. We hope this encourages many more fledgling rocket scientists out there to reach for the stars!
The lesson plans are available here:
Lesson Plan #1: Paper Airplane Designs for Safe Landings
As with the glider test flights of SpaceShipTwo, the most important part to ensure a successful mission is the ability to secure a safe landing. Test a design’s effect on an aircraft’s landing ability with the first lesson plan ‘Paper Airplane Designs for Safe Landings’ where students will create different paper airplane designs, test and study them, to see which ones land the safest.
Lesson Plan #2: WhiteKnightTwo
In the second lesson plan, explore all the ins-and-outs of WhiteKnightTwo, one of the most unique aircrafts in the skies!
Lesson Plan #3: The Design and Test Flight Milestones of SpaceShipTwo
There are a lot of steps you have to take before you can go into space! In the third lesson plan, follow the timeline of SpaceShipTwo from design, to building the aircraft, and successful test flights.
Lesson Plan #4: Careers in Aerospace
Space exploration and commercial space travel is a growing field. In this final lesson plan, students will learn about potential careers in aerospace.

Galactic Unite Scholarship Program
So much of our world relies on advances made through the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Virgin Galactic
and Virgin Unite have come together to announce the Galactic Unite STEM Scholarship Program. Virgin Galactic Future Astronauts Jann Bytheway and Global recording artist/UNESCO Artist for Peace Ambassador Sarah Brightman
have, by generous donations, created the Galactic Unite STEM Scholarship Program. Through this program, Galactic Unite is helping develop the world’s future leaders.
Galactic Unite Mentor Program
We launched the Galactic Unite Mentor Program at the beginning of 2013 to ensure the success of our scholarship students by providing them with additional support. Made possible by one of our scholarship donors, and Virgin Galactic Future Astronaut, Jann Bytheway, the program was launched with a 3 day sponsored mentoring trip to Space X and the Virgin Galactic Mojave site for our Galactic Unite Scholarship recipients, The inaugural trip was a great success! The students had an amazing experience and were mentored by Jann Bytheway, George Whitesides-Virgin Galactic’s Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Attenborough -Virgin Galactic‘s Chief Operating Officer, and many of the Virgin Galactic engineers.
Students received an extensive tour of WhiteKnightTwo, SpaceshipTwo and all of the Virgin Galactic facilities. The students left with new opportunities and a vision for their future, as well as mentors that will provide them with the support needed for them to succeed in reaching their goals and dreams. This kind of hands on experience is a real game changer that has a life altering impact on the students.
