Fact: GLBT young people are talented and keen to be contributing to their community. However, over 40% of GLBT young people feel they need to change or hide who they are in order to feel safe and be accepted.

Despite recent legal changes, young people still feel isolated and fear discrimination as they realise that there sexuality or gender identity is different from what is considered ‘normal’. At times like this, support is even more important. If this support isn’t there, young people risk becoming homeless, engage in risky behaviours or find that stress or anxiety becomes overwhelming.

Since 1982, Twenty10 has been supporting young people who are gay, lesbian, transgender and gender-questioning with advice, counseling, accommodation and, most significantly, connect them to a community that can support them in achieving their goals.

Virgin has enjoyed getting to know the people at Twenty10, supporting them with funding and getting their message out in to the community.

“Twenty10 approached Virgin Unite for assistance on a project we had been wanting to do for a long time but did not have the expertise available: developing the Twenty10 brand. That is when we were put in touch with Mark Gilmour (Brand Director, Virgin Management). The process Mark has taken us on has been very illuminating. The insights of young people and our stake holders has taught us a lot about how we are viewed and what our opportunities for growth are. The process has encouraged us to reconnect with our values and recommit to the future we want to create. However, it has also brought us right back to the basics of who we are for GLBT young people, their families and communities: a place to be themselves with the support they need.
