Empowering South Africa’s next generation

In 2004, with funds raised from the 'Your Finest Hour' campaign and support from the Sarah Blakely Foundation, we launched Women and Men on the Move.

Led by CIDA University, LoveLife and SA Life College, Women and Men on the Move is an army of empowered young people helping to combat the spread of HIV and AIDS in South Africa. We’re helping university students to not only protect themselves, but to act as mentors and health educators in their home communities.

AIDS continues to devastate entire communities in Africa but, given the right tools, skills and confidence, young people can make a huge difference helping to build an HIV-free South Africa. An impressive 1,900 students have taken part and are now out there making a real difference. Hundreds more are joining each year.

Alongside their formal studies, students on the programme not only gain a deeper understanding of HIV and health issues, but also build up their communication skills and self-esteem, helping them make positive choices and stay HIV-free.

There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a student of the programme mentoring other young people. And mentoring those most at-risk of becoming HIV positive, plays a big role in the studies. Students learn how to train and motivate other young people in their village, including households headed by children, building one-on-one mentoring relationships and visiting local schools. By sharing facts about HIV and AIDS, and encouraging positive choices, they’re helping the next generation change their future and stay HIV free.
