Sekenani Primary School in the Masai Mara Game Reserve - Kenya

Flying Club

15 Jan 2008 Flying Club

The Sekenani Primary School sits at the main gate to the world famous Masai Mara game reserve. As well as providing education to all of the Masai children, the school also provides a safe haven, especially for girls faced with traumatic situations such as forced early childhood marriages. It should be considered a sanctuary for the children that they can call home.

Sekenani Primary School

Currently there are more than 459 pupils in eight classes. The school has done exceptionally well in national examinations, rated in the top five in the district in 2006.

Founded ten years ago, the school continues to rely on well wishers, including guests visiting the Masai Mara and Sarova Hotels. It is in desperate need of regeneration, and Virgin Atlantic will fund one or two specific projects within the overall development of the school, including the construction of new buildings. We're also introducing a generator to provide electricity, and pipes to provide fresh running water, for the first time. And we would love to have help from you.

This will make a huge difference but without the basic skills, this simple technology will fall into disrepair. We want to train local people, empowering them and leaving a much more useful legacy.

Its over to you

You don't need to jump on an aeroplane to get involved, to donate, simply use the 'Give cash' option on the left of this page; your help will make an amazing difference.

Golden opportunity

We are inviting Flying Club Gold members to be involved in this essential project. Once construction has been completed, ten volunteers will spend a week preparing the buildings, ready for the children to occupy. At the end of the week there will be a grand opening and a chance to meet the children.

Virgin Atlantic has a strong connection with the people of Kenya. Last June, Sir Richard Branson visited Kenya on our inaugural flight to Nairobi. During the celebrations, he was adopted as a Masai Community elder at the Ipayiani ceremony.
